Suffolk – Mule Sheep

In addition to Roundoak’s conservation and rare breed programme, and the introduction of the more commercially saleable Sussex Cattle, the farm has also acquired 65 Suffolk-Mule ewes and also 'Billy' the Suffolk Ram, thus introducing a more commercial aspect to our current breeding programme.  Although the farm currently has many outlets through local Butchers, the only outlet for the rare breeds is through specialist marketing.  It is counter productive to try to sell these animals through local markets, so in an effort to balance the commerciality of the set up, more conventional breeds have been introduced.

Lambing of the Suffold-Mule sheep in the early part of 2017 was succesful - our lambing percentages were in line with most other farms in the area.  The lambs are superb and well proportioned, however we have experienced a very full on lambing season for the first time as these cross-bred animals do need a lot of help and supervision, unlike the Hebrideans, who are generally left alone.
